Church boat, "kirkkovene", is a traditional Finnish rowing boat, which carried our ancestors to the holy mass on Sundays, sometimes tremendously long distances. After the seremony there was a rowing race with the other boats on the way home. The winner party of the race collected plenty of admiration and respect from other competitors. Our church boat tour in the northern end of Lappajärvi starts at the northern shore of Nykälänniemi cape. All wear life jackets and climb aboard a church boat that can hold 14 rowers at a time. The church boat is seaworthy and controlled by an experienced mate. Beginners will be introduced to the secrets of rowing!
We first direct the prow of the boat towards Herneslahti bay, from where you have a beautiful view on the golf course greenery. We continue rowing towards the summer theater of Halkosaari. The trail is sheltered and runs close to the lakeshore, so winds don't rock the boat. The total distance is 5 kms.
At the end of the excursion, we return to the boat place and enjoy a cup of
campfire coffee and pastry at the adjacent fireplace.
Level of difficulty: Easy.
Rowing speed is adjusted according to wishes of the participants.
Point of departure: The boat dock at the northern tip of cape Nykälänniemi. You can park your car on the golf course parking lot (Nykäläntie 177, Lappajärvi). Walk down the parking lot to the beach and there to the leftmost boat dock.
